Chesterfield Amphitheater

Built to Book

A backstage transformation of the Chesterfield Amphitheater brings the artist experience front and center.

Set within a lush natural setting, the Chesterfield Amphitheater has entertained the community since opening its doors in the summer of 2011. But cramped back-of-house facilities limited what the outdoor venue could offer performing artists and their teams.

The City’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Arts engaged Bond Architects to design a new support complex that reimagines the artist experience.

Greenrooms with a view

Located directly behind the stage, two spacious, fully equipped greenrooms now offer convenient access and premium amenities to artists and their teams. The rear facade features expansive glazing, framing scenic views of the adjacent lake and surrounding trees.

To maximize the connection to nature, a spacious covered terrace runs along the lakeside edge. This sheltered, private deck gives crews a place to relax outdoors between sets. It connects seamlessly to both greenrooms and a central crew break area.

A translucent canopy spans the connection between the new addition and the existing stage. Constructed from a layered polycarbonate panel system, it admits natural light while protecting against rain and summer heat — allowing artists and crew members to move freely between the dressing rooms and the performance area while creating visual continuity between the existing and new structures.

A stage-worthy welcome

Inside, the design balances professional durability with residential comfort. Each greenroom includes a full kitchen, laundry facilities, private bathrooms, and direct access to the outdoor terrace.

Rich wall coverings, acoustic panels with a soundwave motif, and a large photographic print of a live amphitheater performance give the space an upscale energy that grounds it in its purpose.

Marquee destination

The addition of a freestanding restroom building at the front of the amphitheater replaces temporary solutions the venue had previously relied on. Using the same material palette as the back-of-house addition, the new structure establishes visual cohesion across the entire campus.

Bond also solved critical logistical and site-flow challenges to better accommodate modern tour productions. The team redesigned and widened the drive behind the amphitheater to handle the turning radius of full-size tour buses and added electrical hookups to meet today's heavy production power requirements.

The improvements have helped position the Chesterfield Amphitheater as one of the region's premier performing arts destinations.
