Bond Architects renovated five St. Louis County Library (SLCL) branch locations as part of the Phase 1B - Part 2 projects for the St. Louis County Library (SLCL) Master Plan, including the Prairie Commons Branch. Prairie Commons’ garden theme resonates throughout the entire branch, starting in the Children’s Area. Based on the children’s book “Planting a Rainbow,” the Children’s Area features organic shapes and unique design elements like the “Birdhouse,” introduced to create moments of spatial discovery and encourage playful interaction between children and caregivers. The renovations also included adding a children’s garden to the already popular community garden at this location.

The teen space is marked by a bold blue entrance, designed to resemble a tree’s root system, and includes computers and comfy furniture. By creating a unique and designated space for teens, usage of the space tripled compared to previous attendance. Two private study rooms have been added to the branch, as well as a new computer lab, a quiet reading room, a laptop bar, a business center with fax, scanner and copy machines, and a vending area. A revamped community meeting room with a projector, sound system and white board is available for use by individuals and organizations. New shelving, furniture and carpeting has been installed throughout the branch.
